This section provides a listing of all the units that were organised for the Army of the Shenandoah , Second Corps, during the Manassas Campaign, Virginia, July 16–22, 1861.
The Armies of the Shenandoah and the Potomac were united at Bull Run, Manassas, on July 21, 1861 and organised into two corps. General J E Johnston was appointed to command the united confederate forces.
The army was formed into five brigades with a regiment of cavalry, 1st Virginia Cavalry under Lt. Col. J E B Stuart, attached. Only the Thomas Artillery from the Fifth Brigade were present on July 21, 1861 and were attached to the Second Corps. Therefore Brigadier General E K Smith, commanding the Fifth Brigade, was assigned to command the Fourth Brigade, replacing Colonel A Elzey.
Pope and Duncan's Kentucky Battalions Infantry and 9th Georgia Infantry, Second Brigade, and 1st Tennessee Infantry and 8 companies of 11th Mississippi Infantry, Third Brigade, remained at Piedmont Station and were not present on July 21, 1861.
After the battle of First Bull Run, Manassas, the two confederate armies were combined and became known as the Army of Northern Virginia.
